Water based or Solved based?
Like you already know, Pai Cristal develops and produces only water-based products. In fact, there are two big families in the polishing compound world:
- solvent based products
- water based products
But what is the difference between the two?
First, a polishing compound contains different elements, for example oils, surfactants and water indeed. When the percent of water is in major in a formula, this is called water based. Like you can imagine is the same for solvent based: a paste is called like that solvents are more than the other chemical components.
How can we differentiate them?
- First, by the smell. When we enter in a shipyard we immediately notice if the paste is solvent based, because the smell is very strong, not enjoyable. The water based is more odorless.
- Another tip is to observe the pictograms on the bottle, where in solvent based there would be more.
What is the difference between the two in a performance and result level?
- The solvent based warms more the surface than the water based, increasing the risk of burning gelcoat and creating opacities.
- Water based doesn’t apply a protective film on the surface but operates only a mechanic action of flattening. Instead, the solvent applies a film that fill the imperfections, leaving apparently a glossy surface. Over time, the film will evaporate, resurfacing possible sanding marks.
Ending, the water based doesn’t stink, doesn’t warm the surface, doesn’t pollute and leaves a glossy surface that lasts longer.
